Is it really a "win" if Australia technically avoids a recession just because we pumped up immigration numbers?

Have seen a fair few comments in the media by economists that Australia will be one of the "lucky" ones to avoid a recession, with one of the major reasons given being that our immigration intake has grown considerably.

So while this may lead to our GDP figure technically going up slightly and avoiding the dictionary definition of a recession, when pretty much everyone in the actual economy here is suffering more on a per-capita basis - why is this being touted as a "good thing" or "lucky"?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not leading to any significant productivity gains in the economy and/or revolutionary new businesses that actually make the fundamentals of the economy better.

Am I missing something here? Or is this all just so the government can tout that they "avoided a recession" so they can hope to get re-elected?
