Baby Shower Woes

I (25f, 23 weeks pregnant, ftm) intended to have my baby shower sometime in March or April, but as that date gets closer, it's seeming kind of impossible.

From what I understand, traditionally, someone in your life is supposed to throw the shower for you, usually a sister or best friend. I don't have any female friends or sisters, so I'm out of luck there.

It would be stressful to throw the party on my own, and I'd be willing to anyway, but the main issue is that we lack the space. With family and friends being invited (and it being co-ed), we're looking at having nearly 30 guests. If we cut out friends, it'd still be about 20 people that would want to be there for the shower. We can hardly fit that into our home. Long story short, we'd have go rent a space to do the party.

With the price of renting a space, I don't think it'd be smart price-wise to even throw the baby shower. We'd spend more on the party than we would receive back in gifts, which sucks if we're paying for it on our own.

So, we're considering just having a registry that people can buy stuff off of. Is this rude? Taboo? Will people be mad at us? Do you have any better recommendations for what we can do?
