Steam Baths & Saunas
It's the best part of the burn for me. You might be thinking, WHY would I want to be going into a much hotter room in an already scalding desert environment? Let me list the benefits: - After being in a very hot, steamy room, the desert air magically turns into AC that you can enjoy from anywhere. - Clearing your pores of quite possibly the grossest, gnarliest gunk imaginable. You won't believe what comes out. - Giving your skin a really nice gift, and putting on some lotion after. - Fixing your dry contact lenses! My eyes always feel amazing coming out of one of the steam baths in the city, and sometimes this is the only way I can get my vision back to normal after a really dusty and windy day. (but change your contacts every day anyways... or risk your corneas) - Fixing your playa lung! Or at least staving it off for a bit. I bring a good bit of tissue and once I'm back outside, I give a good ole hack and cough/nose blow and boom, clear airways again. At least for another few hours. - Occasionally, somebody will allow you to use a little bit of soap in theirs. However, always ask! You don't want to screw up somebody's carefully set-up system of water management inside. It's better than a regular shower by far and bringing some biodegradable soap in those rare situations is a nice gift to give to the other people inside with you.
Last year the roaming steam sauna art car - which felt like it was as big as a skyscraper - always had me laughing as I saw naked people dancing on top to get some air. If you go by one, whether in a camp or on wheels, stop! It's worth your time. I have my eye on one near my camp already.
Are you bringing a sauna to give as a service to the city? Tell me, I wanna visit.
