How do I build the Ice staff?

After I get the 2 parts and do the defend, it's endless killing. I'm sitting there for almost 3 minutes thinking it's a timer, then thinking it's a soul box killing almost 100 enemies.

What are the requirements to actually complete the defense for building this thing?
