Do pre-bookings, or lack thereof, immediately predict the future of a car model?

I can think of a few examples where there was no news of large numbers of bookings pre-launch and thereafter the models went on to fail dismally - Honda Elevate, all of the Citroens, Tata EVs etc. Cars like the Thar, 3XO, Fronx, Swift etc had immediate traction with lots of pre-bookings and have gone on to be reasonably/pretty successful. Is the number of pre-bookings a sure shot indicator of future success or failure? Can you think of some cars that gradually built up good sales and others that started with a bang but ended with a whimper?
