Stop saying you hope characters aren't gay. It's weird.
I do not usually participate in discourse, and I understand no one is intentionally trying to engage in questionable rhetoric, but I do think a conversation needs to be had at this point about the language the sub uses at times.
When it comes to discussions of misogynistic writing and female characters + wlw being sidelined for mlm relationships, especially valuing unhealthy white male relationships over healthy ones involving women + poc, it makes sense to bring such things up.
But outside of that context, it shouldn't be to the point where there's multiple comments actively hoping there's no mlm next season, hoping certain characters are straight, blaming every problem DC has on having queer people in its cast, etc.
What makes ships like tomjake and trevek bad aren't that they're gay, it's that they're toxic/poorly written/screenhogging. And they're far from alone, conriya, riyalec, krysterek, big chunks of huntally -- really, the only canon ships that have screentime and haven't suffered from the bad writing and/or toxicity hammer are jaiden and gabellie. There's no need to say "we don't need more gay men, we don't need another tomjake" as if the two are one in the same when "we don't need another unhealthy relationship / romance to overtake the plot" will do.
If you don't want any romance after AS -- fair, there was way too many loveplots and an annoying hyperfixation on romance. If you want a main wlw couple -- fair, I do too, there isn't enough of them! And if you think people are crossing the line into harassment, call it out because harassment is bad -- but that isn't a reason to wish for no gay characters. Please try to communicate all of those valid feelings instead of saying you don't want any more gay characters or relationships specifically and manifesting them in a potentially concerning way. Gay people are still an oppressed demographic and this show does provide rep -- sometimes not the best rep, and that's a conversation in and of itself, but saying you wish it didn't and that you hope every character is straight and that you don't want to see gay characters is not the look. Think of who else would say that about a piece of media with gay characters in it, and really think about if you want to align yourself with them language-wise.
I like this community, but I do not want to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome in it, nor do I want anyone else to feel the same. All love 🩵
