Can’t join old gen friends

I’m an Xbox series x player and my friends have Xbox ones. When I try to join there game it takes me to Xbox store to launch Fortnite and when they try to join me it says they can’t play with new gen players which is weird cuz last time I played I could join them. Is it a new update or is there something wrong on my end?
