"SOUL4SALE"
I just listened to "SOUL4SALE" last night for the first time (I waited until the music video came out) and noticed something about the song that I feel takes away from it some, and I wanted to see if anyone else had the same thoughts or not. On the first listen-through, the biggest thing that came to my attention was Fred Durst's first verse. I felt that it was a little odd considering how the song had started stylistically and felt that it didn't fit in the song in that regard because the song starts out with singing and even the verse following the first is singing. On subsequent listens, I was actually paying more attention to the lyrics and noticed mentions of the ressurection of jesus and jesus in general and went through all of the lyrics and didn't see this as a recurring theme of the song-nothing overtly religious is present in the second verse. The same can be said of the style of this verse itself as the second verse is not in the same style as the first. Overall, the first verse is my least favorite part of this song because it just feels forced in a way. Fred Durst is obvioulsy known for his work in the nu metal scene so him rapping does not come as a surprise, but I just feel that it is misplaced and incogruent with the song itself both lyrically and stylistically. If someone were to show me the song without the first verse and the first verse side by side (before listening to the song at all), I would be hard pressed to believe that they were in the same song.
What are y'all's thoughts on this?
