Simon's friends were only mad at him for plot purposes
Like your good friend just got outed and admitted to being blackmailed for months and all you have to say to him is "But what does that have to do with US?" It would have been more realistic for them to say that it wasn't cool how he manipulated them, but that they all understand and feel bad about him being outed, but love him anyways. Instead, the film needed Simon to be alone, so they of course hate him. I could understand them initially thinking "Wait a minute. Simon manipulated us this whole time!" Until realizing Simon was being blackmailed and was terrified, so he had to help Martin. They should have hated Martin, instead of Simon, but yeah. That's the worst part of the movie for me and will continue to age horribly. Each rewatch it just gets worse and worse.
