2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid Break Issues.

Fellow Redditors,

I own a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid 4-door sedan. The car has around 170,000 miles on it. I keep up with typical maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, new tires, etc. I was driving home from work the other day, and my brakes locked up. The power breaking was gone, and my car no longer inched forward as it does when you are in drive, nor reverse. All of the lights on the dashboard lit up: ABS Control, Brake, !, etc. There was also a loud ringing while I moved the car into my garage.

The car was eventually towed to a Toyota dealership. I did some research while it was there, and it looks like Toyota created an extended warranty on a similar issue. Looks like my car is past the 150,000 mile warranty on this issue so I am SOL there. The mechanic said I need new Calipers since they are hanging, and then he will be able to tell if I need a new booster for my breaks.

Now to the questions:

  1. Is it not possible to tell if the booster is broken/working before replacing the calipers?
  2. I was given an estimate of $790 for parts, labor, and repair for the calipers. Then $1790 for parts, labor, and repair for the booster if it is needed. Do these prices seem fair? My father (pretty handy guy) seems to think both of those prices are very high and could be halved with a cheaper shop.
  3. Is there any way to have Toyota pay for the repair of the booster, when they had an extended warranty, Consumer Reports urged a recall, and it caused many crashes and issues, even though I am over the 150,000 miles?

thank you for your time.

cheers,

G
