Berry Bitty Adventures Ruined Huckleberry Pie (my opinion)
I am a fan of Berry bitty adventures (2009)— but I have noticed that they really butchered Huck’s character. Today I’m gonna explain why
In the 2003-2007 adaption of Strawberry Shortcake, we are introduced to one of the only male characters in the SSCU (strawberry shortcake cinematic universe) and his name is Huckleberry Pie. He lives in a treehouse, skates around Strawberryland on a skateboard, wears a backwards SnapBack, and engages in typical “boyish” behavior. He’s not a character we focus on every episode, but he’s a major character in the SSCU because of his male status lol. He also dates back to the 80’s series.
2003-2007 Huck, as we come to know him, is kind, casual, and enjoys having fun with his friends. A bit quirky at times, but a reliable guy who does the right thing. Being a male does not hold Huck back in this show, and he’s not a love interest/reduced to a romantic object for his gender (like many only female characters in male dominated shows).
If Strawberry Shortcake and her friends are putting on a play and need somebody to be the Prince Charming, or knight in shining armor, Huck will play it. It’s not a weird thing- it’s not romance, it’s not anything that brings tension or lust. He’s just happy to play the part as their friend. Huckleberry Pie also stands up for his friends, particularly Strawberry in that episode where Sour Grapes is cheating at the pageant against Strawberry. Huck is honest and normal, part of their gang and around when somebody needs help or a friend.
2009(the problem) Huckleberry Pie as a character in Berry Bitty Adventures is incredibly strange. First of all, he’s not quirky or boyish anymore really. He’s just a guy. That’s really it. Just a man. Nothing really stands out about him besides his gender. He’s not a bad person, but he doesn’t contribute much good. This is where I start seeing problems— Huck contributes DRAMA.
They do this weird series of episodes where him and Blueberry are like in a situationship??? YIKES. He tells her he wants to write a book with her or something, (I haven’t seen this episode for a bit so correct me if I’m wrong this is just what I remembered the day I watched it and I was not having it) but he isn’t actually creative enough on his own to write the kind of book he knows she wants?? So he ignores Blueberry and acts weird and ghosts her and then comes back and acts normal and he’s secretly hanging out with Cherry Jam, a songwriter, to help him come up with ideas right? And Blueberry sees them together, and is emotionally distraught?? Like what is happening. Blueberry already acts like a crazy person often in Berry Bitty Adventures— I mostly write her craziness off as they just want to paint her as an obsessed bookworm! She’s so nerdy and passionate about books and writing that she acts a little weird sometimes in front of others and gets obsessive. Ok whatever. Anyways, there’s all this weird, unnecessary tension between Huck and Blueberry. It’s just not done well. Huck acts like a fuck boy in this series lol. It’s so weird. There’s another episode where the girls ask him if he wants to be in their play, and he agrees.
But he really doesn’t want to be, and is extremely late for the rehearsal and makes the girls wait all night for him. He acts clueless when he’s caught in lies, acts like an idiot and is just like I don’t know!!!!! When they question him, and for some reason doesn’t have enough backbone to say that he doesn’t want to be in this play that the girls tell him he doesn’t have to be in if he doesn’t want to. He goes through rehearsal messing things up, acting weird and awkward, and it makes the girls feel bad. TAKE YOUR PROBLEMS HOME BUDDY. Talk about weird. How many more times do I have to call him that?
He’s clearly used as a plot device for his gender, the writers act like he being a male is a different species (when they literally talk to giant fucking worm and bug people in this particular reboot) and he’s put in situations where the girls fight over his attention/ and he doesn’t even care. He is just like, I want to go home. Why are you even here then? The pure, platonic and sweet friendship he had with them in 2003-2007 is gone. Now he’s just a flashy boy character whose main purpose is just to be a boy. And apparently fuck up all the time. And not even in a way really that’s tasteful and handles life lessons, like Peppermint Fizz (one of my favorite characters my girl <3) from 2003-2007. She fucks up all the time, very badly too many times, and the episode and writers work together to teach a lesson about her being too judgmental, cheating, hurting other people’s feelings, trying to control everyone.
I hate Huck from 2009.
