Unpopular Opinion

gonna start this off by saying i haven’t watched the newest episode, i’m rewatching the entire show hence the purpose of this post.

this is probably a super unpopular opinion and i will probably get a shit ton of down votes for posting this but…. stephen at one point and maybe still does love lucy.

in season 1 when stephen was at diana’s dads place and invited lucy over, he got super upset when she brought up him not taking her to parties and around their peers on campus. he ended up going off on her explaining that he didn’t come from money and was choosing to spend his money on her. i also feel like him staring into that painting when they were having sex was supposed to represent all the “confusion” in his head.

we all know he only got back together with diana at the party because she told him she could get him a internship with her dad. we also see once she tells him she’s had a argument with her dad and that they aren’t speaking stephen starts treating her like shit and being rude towards her. this is also when he starts playing mind games with lucy right in front of diana.

when lucy confronted him in last weeks episode you could tell what she said hurt him because he knew he fucked up when he left her for diana. yes he IS the biggest narcissist i’ve ever seen written, but i think lucy was the one person he was truly falling for. hence him also telling her about macy, family money issues, all the eye lingering at the engagement party, etc.

we also have to keep in mind stephen has a mental illness just like his mom which he isn’t getting help for. i think he really realized he had an issue when his sister told him he reminded her of their mom when lucy sent her the voicemail (maybe he has always known but tried to push it out of his mind that he wasn’t like his mom).
