"Deep pantry" vs reserves you never touch

Edit: The replies I've gotten here have been AMAZING. Logical, anxiety-easing, and practical. Thank you all! I have read (and will continue to read) every reply because each one had their own nugget of wisdom. You are all the best!

Post: I understand (rather, I learned from this sub 👍) how I need to view my prep as a deep pantry. That's been very helpful and I've gradually been adding to my stock and using it all via FIFO.

However, in light of recent events, and considering the tariffs coming in, I'm feeling sort of "f-it" regarding the deep pantry method. Not to get rid of it, but to ALSO just start buying stuff that is 1) edible and non perishable 2) maybe not something I might necessarily eat on the regular, but would be super thankful to have when there's nothing else, and 3) just overstock on literally anything that I think can be life saving.

My question is: when, if ever, do you make this switch? For example, I do not eat sardines. But they're convenient, have protein, etc. I'm tempted to start buying lots of sardines for "later."

Is there such a thing as a "reserve"? A stock pile of food that you store and NEVER touch, while keeping your day to day focused on the deep pantry method? Im planning for if there will one day come a day where a trip to the store to restock is no longer possible. I want to know I have a final backup for rationing beyond my regular pantry.

Please help a girl out here 🤦🏼‍♀️
