Out of curiosity, how much is considered a good pay job in London?

I just came back from London and had a very interesting conversation with an Uber driver during my trip to Gatwick Airport.

I asked if a £60k job would be considered a good pay job in London. He laughed that if he could get such a job, he would leave Uber right away and tolerate a 2 hour ONE WAY commute to go to the job every day. And he said usually a £50k job is already considered a very good pay job in London regardless of industries.

I thought this is ridiculous because, even the grocery costs in local London supermarkets are surely lower than NYC, the restaurants and entertainment costs are still somewhat nearly as high as NYC.

I wonder how people could survive with a £25k to £35k salary in London with such high costs of living - I walked by a Venchi Chocolate store next to the Natural History Museum and saw a job posting on their window. They asked to pay regular store staff for £26k and £32k for assistant store manager.

I mean this is crazy. How come the job market is so deteriorated in the UK now - we are talking about the largest city in the UK and people will die hard for a £60k job really? Is that true or the Uber driver was just overstating the pay level reality in the UK?
