Worm in yarn

Hi everyone! I'm new to crocheting and i was in the process of crocheting a scarf as a gift. I store all the yarn and scarf in the same place and today i found a worm in one of the yarns... i checked a few old posts here and a lot of ppl suggest freezing everything but some ppl said to just throw everything to avoid an infestation... Since I'm renting right now i need to avoid the risk of infestation so I'm ready to throw out the yarn but is the scarf also at risk? Will freezing the scarf work? If its still risky then i can just throw it away and start again but i would appreciate any advice on avoiding this happening again. Also do those worms only infest yarn? Or should i look out for my carpets too? Thank you!
