G14 (2024) : Thoughts and feedback about USB-C gaming?
Hi everyone!
I’m using a 2024 Zephyrus G14 and find that the included 180W power brick is a bit too chunky for my taste so naturally I have done some research about gaming while charging with the USB-C port.
From what I have read on this subreddit, the 2024 models should support passthrough charging via USB-C which is great for battery degradation.
However, I have also read that it only support up to 100W compared to the 180W the included adapter can provide.
So now I have a few questions before I jump the gun and buy a powerful enough USB-C cable and adapter :
What is the maximum power the laptop can draw from the included power brick? Does it really use the full 180W?
What is the maximum power the laptop can use when running a very intensive game? For example, the 4070 model have a dedicated GPU that have a 90W TGP so does that mean that it would translate to only 10W remaining to power the rest of the laptop (CPU + display + fan + etc) when using a USB-C charger?
Are there people on here that are using (or have tried using) a USB-C charger while gaming and can confirm if this is a viable option or if I should stick to the included brick 180W adapter?
To give you an example, I have tried playing Red Dead Redemption 2 with a 65W USB-C charger and a random cable I had laying around (that seems to provide up to 45W of charging according to G-Helper real time monitoring) and the game just drop to single digit framerate as I soon as I plug the charger (which is expected of course).
Would I be able to play the game at full speed with a 100W charger or is gaming with USB-C a lost cause aside from not very intensive games?
Thanks for the feedback and opinions.
