Golliwog Toys

So there's a bit of a ho-ha on a knit and crochet group I'm part of and I was hoping for your opinion on the matter. The group crafts small toys to be left in the wild for others to find and (hopefully) post their new little friend. Recently one of these toys was a golliwog. Shortly after a different member posted their newly made golliwog toy ready to go out. My knee jerk reaction was to report it to the admins. Apparently I wasn't the only one because a post was soon made by the admins asking that we only report posts that are 'deeply offensive, copyright infringement or rude'.

The thing is seemingly everyone in the group both for and against the toys are all white ladies 'of a certain age'. Now I don't want to speak for black people on what they should or shouldn't be offended by. So. Golliwogs. Harmless toy or something that should be shelved as a product of their time that's no longer appropriate?
