Need advice with worm in yarn!!

Hi everyone!

I posted this in another subreddit but i thought i might get more insight here. Im new to crocheting and I've been working on a scarf as a gift. I store all the yarn and scarf in the same place (big mistake??? Lemme know) and today i checked the yarn and saw a worm. I checked a few reddit posts and some ppl advice you to freeze it and do it regularly but some ppl say to just get rid of it to avoid infestation. Since I'm renting (and my landlord is a tough person to deal with) I want to avoid infestation at any cost so I'm ready to throw away the yarn (and scarf if it's also risky) and start all over again so i would appreciate any advice on how to avoid this happening again. Also do those worms only infest yarn? Or should i look out for my carpets and such. Please let me know! I'm desperate!!
