Are successful women undesirable to successful men?

I had a friend recently tell me that successful men will only marry a woman who depends on them financially... therefore successful women will end up alone. He literally discouraged me from pursuing a higher position in my nursing career because of this same idea. Are guys really turned off when a woman makes a certain amount of money? Or is he maybe just insecure about his own financial status? I thought it'd be better with the way our economy is set up.
