Putting the Foundation for Energy Security and Innovation on a maximum impact path

The Foundation for Energy Security and Innovation is now a reality: an affiliated but autonomous non-profit organization authorized by Congress to support the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy and to accelerate the commercialization of energy technologies. FESI’s establishment was a vital first step, but its value depends on what happens next.

In order to maximize FESI’s impact, the board and staff should think big from the start, identify unique high-leverage opportunities to complement DOE’s work, and systematically build the capacity to realize them.

In a new memo, GMU Professor David M. Hart lays out how

  • how FESI can align with DOE’s energy mission,
  • how FESI can act as catalyst and incubator of initiatives that drive public-private technology partnerships, and
  • how FESI can develop lean and highly-networked operational capabilities to maximize performance

Questions for you:

  • Have you been following the creation and standing-up of FESI?
  • What public-private partnerships are you most excited to see FESI pursue (or which ones do you really want them to pursue)?
  • What early-stage clean energy tech do you think would be best served by assistance from FESI?
