England declaring to defend colonies?

I had a truce with England as Iroquois, my capital is in North America. I attacked the thirteen colonies and like 3% in England just automatically joined in the war. This is the second time this has happened this game. Is this intended? Can I just never reconquer any land while I'm being colonized?
