Is it possible to convert a non-EU driver’s license to a German one after living in Germany for a few years?
Has anyone had any experience trying to convert a foreign driver’s license after the 6 month period after arrival in the country?
I have been living in Germany since 2015, and my latest driver’s license from my home country was issued in 2016 with validity until 2026. However, I never bothered with the conversion as I never needed to drive in Germany until now.
From the information I’ve gathered online, it seems that this should not be a problem. As in, the 6 month deadline refers to the validity of your foreign license for driving, but the actual conversion process has no deadline as long as the foreign license is valid when doing the conversion.
Edit: Finally found the information that I needed with no ambiguity at https://allaboutberlin.com/guides/canadian-german-driving-license
TL,DR: You can do the conversion after the 6 month period. However if you renewed your license after moving to Germany, you also need to show that you already had a license before immigrating to Germany (ex. copy of old license or driving school certificate from your home land)
