How big is the gap between AHL and NHL players?

I follow both the San Jose Sharks and the Barracuda. I feel like the AHL players are just as fast, big, and talented but maybe make a few more minor mistakes. Seems like too much talent and not enough space than lesser quality.

One thing I know for certain is they play harder and more aggressive in the AHL. There's way more hitting, fights, and scrums after a blown whistle when the goalie saves the puck. I feel the NHL doesn't waste their time as much on that.
