Sol III is the Graveyard of Star Empires.
The Hegemon has never lost a single war. Slowly conquerring world after world, polity after polity, their advances was unstoppable, their dominion of the entire galaxy all but assured...
Until they found a small, insignificant backwaters civilization that wasn't even close to figuring out the Hyperdrive, whose grandest achievement was to have landed on another barren planet in their star system. The Hegemon rejoiced at yet another habitable planet and billions of sould to enslave, and their remaining enemies wept, for these poor primitives had no idea what was about to happen to them...
The initial invasion went smoothly. A show of force from orbit has resulted in the quick surrender of this primitive world, followed by occupation. The complete disarmamemnt of their armed force was proceeding well, and resources extraction was advancing on schedule.
Rumors of unrest reached Hegemon command, but they paid it no mind. What weapons would they fight with?
When obsolete crop dusters and farming vehicles approached the biggest Hegemon garrison located in the former State of Montana, they were dismissed as scouts having made a mistake and detection equipment misidentifying them as military assets. In minutes, the garrison fell to saturation bombing and direct fire from deadly chemical weapons.
The Hegemon Garrison of the former state of Ukraine didn't make the same mistake. It shot down any Terran craft approaching it, only for their Corium payloads gathered from the nearby village of Prypiat to still wipe out the garrison from deadly radiation poisoning.
Their hard-won freedom was short lived, as Hegemon orbital assault troops with orbital support swiftly rertaliated. Terran citizens turned portable generators and all manners of vehicles into makeshift explosive payloads, hid them in garbage collection points, and soon enough, Terran cities had become a meatgrinder for the most elite Hegemon forces.
Forces in rural and remote areas were not faring any better. The former nation of Russia had settled their ancient enmity with other former nations in the face of an invader from another world, and sent many trained mammalian beasts of combat to the fray. Packed with primitive explosives, these mammals charged at Hegemon troops before detonating their payloads, socring several kills on even the most advanaced hegemon ground vehicles. Missiles guided by trained avian beasts swatted down Hegemon air support.
Casualties mounted, but Hegemon still had complete orbital supremacy. Not for long though, as enemies of the Hegemon decided to smuggle unmarked weaponry, mothballed an,d opsolete space capable ships and military adviosors to these determined "humans", hoping to at least slow down the Hegemon.
The beginning of the end of the Hegemon was "Operation Slingshot". The highjacking of simple fuel vessels belonging to the Hegemon. Using stolen communications codes, they coordinated a simple assault that crippled the Hegemon's entire navy.
By the times the Hegemon security forces noticed any irregularity with these antimatter fuel shipments, they were already set on a collision course with Hegemon naval yards. Operation Slingshot crippled 90% of the Hegemon shipyards in one fell swoop. Survivors and all witnesses tell of a final transmission sent on an open frequency right before impact, that linguists are still struggling to make sense of.
"Greetings comfort food processed in the form of bars to all of you having sexual intercourse with your progenitors!"
With their navy crippled, the Hegemon soon had bigger problems to handle than the pathetic resistance of a single primitive world. Their enemies both within and without, sensing weakness, pounced without mercy.
Terrans used the technological bounty reverse-engineered from both Hegemon wreckages and weapons given to them to develop their own FTL programs.
Terran Space was always lightly defended, their technology outdated, but in the coming centuries, there was one constant in the chaotic, uncertain galaxy.
Sol III was where Star Empires went to die.
