Location of Instruments in Plants

Question for the techs out there, ¿How do you locate all the instrumentation that is in your plants/ area besides using P&ID’s and asking fellow operators and doing field/ job walkdown?

Example: Recieved a work order where a flow meter wasn’t reading right, located the P&ID and identified on what process it was (refinery, big plant), completed job walkdown and asked operators about it but never found it. (In this case that instrument would be on an elevated pipe rack, not enough visibility from ground level).

Do you guys use some sort of GIS(Geographical Information System), with the exact coordinates of your instruments?

I know this might only be a thing to consider in pipelines/ big plants.
