Items Disappeared From My Chest?

I was always over encumbered from herbs so was a relief to get a chest, went to another town and got a chest there too, put blacksmith stuff in that one and herbs in the other, went back to get my alchemy materials and half are gone, anyone else had this?

Tbh I may have used them and just forgot, hopefully its my memory and not a bug because now I'll be scared to store things in chests
