Is the May 10th game launch global?

So I've been looking forward to the game's launch and got it yesterday, and I'm already hooked-- I joined the server Wind Seeker but it seems to be a South East Asian server. I was under the impression that the game's launch was for a global server. Are all the servers basically the same? Does it really matter which server I'm in or who I'm playing with?

I'm looking for other North Americans to play with and form a guild simply because they have a similar time zone.
