How would you describe the skills needed to play NG well?
I'm trying to decide whether NG is something I'd enjoy, and I think the most critical thing for me is what you need to do to be able to play it well.
I enjoy games where what you need to do, and what went wrong when you die, is legible. Mostly soulsboure/sekiro and fighting games. And I guess part of both of those genres is also pattern recognition.
Crucially in both of those you're usually fighting one or a small number of enemies at a time.
I'm worried that with the higher enemy count and speed of NG it'll feel less legible to me- there will be too many things happening all at once. (I'm also a bit worried about the lack of lock on - but there's soft lock on, is that right?)
To give an example of combat that I didn't enjoy (and I think would be considered easier than soulsborne) - I bounced hard off Spider-Man 2. Lots of enemies coming at you all at once and the challenge seems to be more about switching between them in a manageable way rather than interacting more deeply with the behavior of any one of them in particular. I found it frustrating and boring.
I also didn't get on with DMC (the recentish one) when I tried playing it. Found it tedious, and I don't get anything out of doing combos to "look stylish" - my aim is to beat the enemies and that's it.
NG looks really cool and I would like to enjoy it, but I'm a bit worried about shelling out 40 quid for it when I'm not sure it's something I'd get on with.
NB. I've seen some questions have been asked already about comparing NG to eg Sekiro but I think I'm coming at this from a slightly different angle. I want to understand not whether it's similar, but what the challenge of playing it feels like.
