Many Pokémon have Signature Moves that are Underused or Outclassed by Other Moves. I Tried to Fix Them.
Many Pokémon have signature moves that, despite being that 'Mon's signature, simply don't get used for various reasons. I've chosen a few and made some changes I think would benefit the Pokémon.
- I'll start with arguably my simplest change: Shelter, the signature move of Hisuian Sliggoo and Goodra. Goomy also has access, but only if it's caught in Legends: Arceus. In Gen IX, Shelter sharply boosts the user's Defense stat, and has 10 PP. This effect is identical to Acid Armor, a move Goodra-Hisui also has access to, but with 10 fewer PP.
My proposed change to Shelter is to make it give a Special Defense boost in addition to its usual Defense boost. This would make Goodra-Hisui into a very strong wall against both physical and special threats. Its Shell Armor ability preventing Critical Attacks and its Steel typing preventing Toxic, along with its access to Body Press would make it a potent threat that would need to be considered in whichever meta it lands itself in. There would still be counterplay with potent attackers such as specs-Glimmora, offensive Landorus-T, or Iron Valiant, however.
- The next move I'll take a look at is Alakazam and Kadabra's notoriously bad signature move, Kinesis, a move that is unusable in most formats and strictly outclassed by Sand Attack. Kinesis is an 80% accurate status move that lower's the target's accuracy by one stage. I aim to completely rework this move to make it actually usable and give Alakazam a niche even after decades of powercreep have destroyed this once staple of a pokemon.
My change to Kinesis would make it a unique set-up move. Upon use, Kinesis would raise the user's Special Attack by one stage and activate a unique effect on the user. This effect would cause all physical attacks to use the user's Special Attack stat instead. Alakazam, as of Gen 8 (Alakazam is not present in SV) has a wide variety of strong physical coverage moves, but due to its pitiful Attack it hasn't gotten any use out of them since before the physical/special split.
This new Kinesis would allow Alakazam to set up with a slightly worse calm mind and allow it to use its wide array of physical moves such as Thunder/Ice/Fire/Drain Punch, Knock Off, Return, and Iron Tail to very strong effect. This would likely be broken on Mega-Alakazam, but that's already Nat Dex Ubers anyway and is incredibly frail defensively.
- Dark Void is the Signature Move of Darkrai, it is a 50% accurate move that puts the target(s) to sleep if it lands. In Doubles it has a niche as it can hit both opponents at once, but in singles it is outclassed by Hypnosis, which Darkrai also learns.
My proposed change is to make it so if the target is already asleep, Dark Void never misses and turns itself into a Special Dark-Type move with 120 base power. While this wouldn't necessarily make it better than Hypnosis due to it still having lower accuracy, it would give it a niche in that it compresses the roles of both Hypnosis and Dream Eater, allowing Darkrai to run an additional move.
- Glaciate is the signature move of Kyurem, and a move that is nearly identical to Icy Wind, except with 10 more base power but 5 fewer PP. Kyurem is already weaker than its Black and White variants, and having a signature that is effectively useless in all but the most niche scenarios doesn't help it.
I would change Glaciate completely, making it instead a 100 base power Ice-Type attack that is special by default but turns physical if it would deal more damage. Glaciate would also lower the target's speed by one stage, but only if Kyurem moved last in the turn.
- Land's Wrath is one of Zygarde's signature moves. It is a physical Ground-Type attack with 90 base power, which makes it identical to Thousand Arrows and Thousand Waves, but without any of the additional effects of those moves. I would give Land's Wrath an additional effect like its counterparts. Land's Wrath would now deal 1.5x damage against targets who are Grounded (Including by Thousand Arrows).
