Annoyed that my fun city break just got complicated (Vent, My phone broke)
TLDR: My phone broke, making a lot of logistics more complicated than I want to deal with with an easy trip and now I have to just deal with it lol. Basically just whining about minor inconveniences in the 21st century, sorry if that is annoying to any readers :)
Took a flight from Germany to Poland yesterday. My bf is out of town for work all week so I decided to do a fun little week long trip. FMM-KRK, no issue. On my train from Krakow to Warsaw my phone completely KO‘d. White screen of death + unusable. Luckily I remembered had brought my ipad so I was able to find my accomodation + the check in instructions (it was hell though, took 2 extra hours to do it and connecting to some very sketchy wifi networks).
The kicker is, *I have a second phone at home* that I almost brought as backup, but decided against it so I wouldn‘t risk breaking it + overpacking (I‘m onebagging this trip with just a 17L pack). I also didn‘t bring my apartment keys, because my bf was going to pick me up at the train station. I figured since he‘d be picking me up anyways, might as well not have the chance to lose them. HAAAA. So I can’t just cut my losses and go home, I am effectively stuck here.
So! I know the obvious solution is just to buy a physical map and wander around. I’m not the most travelled person (I’m Canadian and only started travelling 2 years ago when i moved to Europe), but I do solo travel a few times a year. Usually at least with a device that can connect to wifi though lol. But I‘m now pretty disenfranchised by this all lol. I came here for a very chill city excursion. I was just hoping for a relaxed, easy and streamlined, brainless trip, which it now isn‘t for a couple reasons:
- My bank cards weren‘t working last night (yet to find out today). I was planning on taking out cash today, so lol. I‘m not too concerned about this one, because I think it will work eventually. nonetheless I am annoyed that I have to deal with it. Luckily I always travel with a package of ramen in case I‘m too exhausted on the travel day to find food, so I still had dinner lol.
- Currently my devices have a weird disconnect where I can‘t access everything, so my iPad still can‘t access some of the stuff on my phone that I would have liked to be able to access.
- Because I came for some comfort and chill vibes, I‘m staying a good distance outside of the city centre. Not really a big deal because I can just buy a map/memorize transit stops, but that adds more friction to the simplicity of sightseeing etc.
- I have some dietary restrictions and above that am admittedly picky, so I do like to have access to menus and everything before hand. Yes I can do this in my accommodation. Still significantly less convenient as I have an allergy to a staple food.
- Will have to go out and get my boarding passes and train passes printed out or use my iPad, which also isnt a big deal i‘m just frustrated by it. The flights are in/out of Krakow and the flight back lands 3.5 hours by train from my home. so, its an involved journey of 9 or so hours of navigating different transit methods. Super easy with apps in case of delays! Somewhat Less easy with nothing.
- Currently cannot log in to my Deutsche Bahn account on this device, so I‘ll have to see if I can use my train pass at all or if I‘ll have to pay for the trip. Yawn.
- Had a slightly more complicated self directed day trip planned that I am just not going to navigate now lol.
- Lack of Google Translate
-Lack of google maps!! Again nbd since i can probably find a map somewhere. But inconvenient all the same
- No pictures!! I can try to find a disposable camera though which I do think would be quite fun.
- General things like, needing to order or buy through apps. receiving tickets and QR codes via email. I couldn‘t even validate my transit ticket last night via my iPad because it had no internet connection. I‘m the first to admit that I, like most of us, are clearly too reliant on my phone to navigate the world. The digitalization of so many services doesnt make it any easier to stay „analog“ though haha.
The elephant in the room is that yes, I likely can just go to Mediamarkt or something to get a cheap phone with Sim while I‘m here. Because I already have a phone at home I don‘t love the idea of buying ANOTHER phone. I‘m a student, my budget only goes so far lol. Maybe that‘s too stubborn for the sake of my enjoyment? Idk.
I need to buy myself some food and shampoo today (lol) and will honestly probably just write this day off to buy a map and start planning what to do. This is a kind of trip/challenge I would enjoy, had I been planning for it. But because I was just trying to have a simple brainless trip, I‘m cheesed lol.
